Neverness to Everness (NTE) throws a lot at you in the first hour: a city, a shop, a team, vehicles, side jobs and a combat system with its own vocabulary. This guide sorts that into what matters first. It sticks to systems confirmed by the developer, the platform holders and reputable guides; where public information is thin — exact currencies, rates, endgame — we say so rather than guess.

What kind of game you are starting

NTE is a supernatural open-world RPG in which you play the first 'unlicensed' Anomaly Hunter in the city of Hethereau, taking Anomaly commissions from the public and working out of an antique shop called Eibon.

It is free to play, launched globally on 29 April 2026, and supports cross-platform play across PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, iOS and Android.

Two things follow from that. First, your progress is not tied to one device, so play wherever is convenient. Second, the game is structured as a live service: expect the story to continue in updates, and do not treat the launch chapters as the whole book.

Terminology you will meet immediately

Anomaly: the supernatural events and entities that give the game its premise. Anomaly Hunter: your role. Esper types: the six affinities characters belong to — Lakshana, Cosmos, Anima, Incantation, Chaos and Psyche. Class types: five further categories including gas, solid, liquid and plasma.

Esper Cycle: the reaction system triggered by combining Esper types in combat. Esper Meter: the gauge that must fill before a cycle can be triggered; it charges through skills, ultimates and basic attacks, and parrying an attack fills it completely.

The official site also describes character roles in combat terms — for example Gas as 'Main DPS / DoT' and Plasma as 'Burst DPS / Follow-up Attack' — which is the vocabulary the team-building screens use.

Combat in one paragraph

Combat is third-person action: basic dodges, perfect dodges and parries, with the ability to switch between characters in a team of four.

The beginner mistake is to treat this as a solo action game and stick with one character. The design rewards swapping: a swap at the right moment is how you trigger Esper Cycle reactions, and a well-timed parry charges the meter that makes them possible. You do not need to master this in week one, but you should be swapping deliberately by the end of it. The combat guide goes deeper.

Getting around: movement, stamina and vehicles

You can run, jump, sprint, climb, swim and drive vehicles, with a stamina system limiting the special movements. Vehicles can be customised and upgraded.

Sony's launch feature also confirms a first-person perspective option and driving with adaptive trigger resistance on PS5, plus a Ghost Train that cuts through Anomaly space for fast travel.

Early on, learn the map by driving rather than fast-travelling. Commissions and side jobs are scattered, and knowing the districts pays off later. Treat vehicle upgrades as a mid-term project rather than a first-day priority.

The side systems, and which to touch first

Beyond combat and story, the launch feature describes a hangout system for inviting companions along, Move-In Invites to share residences such as penthouses and villas, online mahjong, street racing challenges and fishing.

There is also a business layer: building a business empire and running storefronts, driving for income with Swift Cab, delivery runs with Sterry Express, and a supercar collection.

A sensible order for the first week: follow the main story until the city opens up; take commissions as they appear, because they are how the game teaches its systems; try one income activity — Swift Cab or Sterry Express — once you have a vehicle, so you understand where money comes from; leave the business empire, housing and collection systems until the fundamentals are comfortable. They are long-term sinks, not starters.

Co-op, if you have friends playing

Two cooperative stages were highlighted at launch: Pink Paws Heist, for squads of one to four players with time-based vault objectives that require coordination, and Coldmount Hospital, an asymmetrical horror stage that emphasises stealth, hiding and environmental awareness over direct combat.

Neither is where you should start, but both are good reasons to bring a friend once your team can handle standard content. The horror stage in particular is a different kind of game from the rest of NTE.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Playing one character. Swapping is the core of the combat loop; build a team of four with mixed Esper types from the start.
  • Ignoring parries. A parry fills the Esper Meter completely — it is the fastest route to your strongest moments.
  • Spending premium currency in the first hour. You do not yet know which characters or roles you will want. Wait until the roster and the reaction system make sense.
  • Treating side jobs as filler. They are how the game explains its economy and unlocks its systems.
  • Fast-travelling everywhere. You will not learn the city, and the city is the game.

Starter checklist

  1. Finish the opening chapters until commissions unlock.
  2. Assemble a four-character team with at least two different Esper types.
  3. Practise the parry timing on early enemies until the meter charge feels reliable.
  4. Get a vehicle, drive the districts, and try one income job.
  5. Read the in-game gacha rates screen before making any pull decisions.
  6. If your PC struggles, check the requirements guide before changing settings blindly.
