'Free RPG' covers two very different things: games that give you everything and sell cosmetics, and games that give you the world and sell the characters. Both can be worth your time, but you should know which you are installing. Every game here was verified free on 3 September 2026, and for each we say plainly how it is monetised.

Cosmetic-only and convenience models

Path of Exile

Grinding Gear Games' action RPG is free on Steam and states that all microtransactions are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay. Minimum: Windows 10, a 2.6 GHz quad-core, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 650 Ti or Radeon HD 7850 and 40 GB.

The benchmark for free RPGs. Nothing you can buy changes your character's power, and the build system is deep enough to fill years. Its learning curve is steep, and the community's build guides are effectively required reading.

Warframe

Digital Extremes' free-to-play co-op action game lists an official PC minimum of Windows 7 64-bit, a Core i7 860, Core i5 750 or FX-4100, 4 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11 GPU and 50 GB, and had about 45,000 concurrent Steam players on our snapshot day.

More looter-shooter than traditional RPG, but the progression, crafting and character-building are RPG to the core. Monetisation sells shortcuts and cosmetics; everything is obtainable free with time.

Guild Wars 2

ArenaNet's MMORPG offers its core game free on Steam, with expansions sold separately that lift free-account restrictions and add features such as expanded character slots and login rewards. Minimum: Windows 7 64-bit, an i3 3.4 GHz or Athlon x4 3.8 GHz, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 680 or HD 7970 and 70 GB.

The only traditional MMORPG here, and the only one where 'free' comes with an asterisk: the core game is complete, but the expansions are where the game has spent a decade. Try free, buy if it sticks.

Gacha models — the world is free, the roster is not

Gacha games acquire characters through randomised pulls with currency earned in play or bought. Each is legally required to display its odds in-game; read them before spending. We are not quoting rates because they change with updates.

Genshin Impact

miHoYo's open-world action RPG released on 28 September 2020 on Windows, Android, iOS and PlayStation 4, and is free to play with gacha mechanics. Combat is built around character switching and elemental interactions.

The game that made this model mainstream in the West. The world is large and genuinely free to explore; the cast is where the money is. Distributed through HoYoverse's own PC launcher.

Honkai: Star Rail

miHoYo's turn-based RPG released on 26 April 2023 for Windows, iOS and Android, with PlayStation 5 following in October 2023; it is free to play with gacha mechanics and has players control a team of up to four in turn-based combat.

The turn-based alternative to Genshin from the same studio. If you want an RPG you can play deliberately rather than reflexively, this is the gacha pick.

Wuthering Waves

Kuro Games' open-world action RPG is listed free on Steam, where it released on 28 April 2025.

A faster, more combat-forward take on the open-world gacha formula, with a strong emphasis on parries and dodges. Free on Steam and through the developer's launcher.

Zenless Zone Zero

HoYoverse's urban action RPG is listed free on Steam, where it released on 16 June 2026.

The studio's third gacha RPG trades open-world exploration for a stylised city and fast squad combat. Newest to Steam of the four.

NTE: Neverness to Everness

Hotta Studio's supernatural open-world RPG is free on Steam, where it released on 7 July 2026, with gacha character acquisition. Minimum: a Core i7-10700, 16 GB of RAM, a GTX 1660 or RX 5600 and 70 GB.

An urban open world with a very long list of side systems — driving, businesses, co-op heists, fishing — and the steepest PC requirements on this page. We have a full cluster of coverage.
